Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in the state of Colorado was originally a National Monument which was changed in part to preserve the mountain watershed of the Great Sand Dunes. Located near Pueblo, Colorado from the main highway, the Park is in close proximity to Alamosa after arrival to the Great Sand Dunes. The Park encompasses 150,000 acres of Park and Wilderness landscape that includes not only dunes, but grasslands, wetlands, forests, alpine lakes, and the tundra which has peaks soaring to over 13,000-feet. The sand dunes in the National Park are the tallest in North America.
