Amistad National Recreation Area established in 1965 is located near Del Rio, Texas where the Amistad Reservoir shares the borders of the United States and Mexico on the Rio Grande River. Although the landscape surrounding the lake is desert, it sits upon 100 million year-old Cretaceous limestone, with marine fossils, sinkholes, limestone caves and prehistoric rock art; the recreation area is home to flora and fauna that can be found at no other National Park. On the U.S. side you will find camping and water activities including boating, fishing as well as hiking, birding and hunting being available. A drive across the Dam offers a wonderful view; or stop by the Visitor's Center which offers several different films, and exhibits explaining the history of both the cultural and natural resources.
