Aztec Ruins National Monument

Aztec Ruins National Monument preserves ancestral Pueblo structures in north-western New Mexico. The structures at this World Heritage Site were built and used by ancestral Puebloans, also called Anasazi; the name "Aztec" was mistakenly given to the area by American settlers in the 1800's, who did not recognize the Native American Indian as being capable of such complexity. The Ruins were built in the 12th century, with the presumption that they moved on 200 years later due to a lack of resources such as sufficient water. The multi-story houses, some with as many as 400 interconnected rooms, the "great kiva" a circular chamber used for ceremonies and "tri-wall" structures can be seen via a self-Guided tour, or an interpretive Ranger-led tour. At the Visitor Center, museum exhibits of ancient artifacts, an informative film regarding pre-Columbian history related to the area, lectures and demonstrations of Indian crafts are also offered.
