Bandelier National Monument covers an enormous landscape in an effort to preserve the architectural and cultural resources of the Ancestral Pueblo People who have lived in the area for more than 10,000 years. There are over 70 miles of trails to hike, much of which is through designated Wilderness areas that afford the hiker the benefit of magnificent vistas. For the day visitor Frijoles Canyon offers a mostly paved short walk from the Visitor's Center, where pueblo homes, ceremonial structures known as kivas, rock paintings and petroglyphs can all be seen. For the adventurous, continue on to Alcove House, a sheltered cave that is 140 feet above the canyon floor and can be accessed by a series of wooden ladders and stone stairs.
