Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area located in the state of Montana is in close proximity to Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument. The river at Bighorn Canyon was originally a muddy stream running through the prairie, which metamorphosed into a clear, cold water river after construction of Yellowtail Dam. This transformation has made the Recreation Area a superb site drawing many visitors each year, as well as being internationally popular for sport fishing. Opportunities for many outdoor activities are not limited to the anglers. This vast area offers cycling, horseback riding, auto touring, five different camping areas, boating, visiting historic ranches in the area and of course, hiking. The sights and activities are both a natural wonder, as well as offering a diversity of cultural sights. Visiting one of the many ranches during your visit will impart a sense of history that can only be found in actually seeing how these ranching pioneers lived; while a trip to Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range will astonish you with sightings of the largest herd of wild horses in the country. A day on Bighorn Lake reveals the immensity of the Bighorn Canyon with its towering cliffs; or hike an abandoned town with its spectral atmosphere, or take a short walk to one of the spectacular overlooks. There is a diversity of wildlife to be seen, from bison and elk to the painted turtle, in addition to birds, insects and more. Panoramic prairies, forests and mountains with karsts and caves and a diversity of scenic views with valley habitats and riparian habitats, all spread over more than 68,000 acres of land.
