Capulin Volcano National Monument is located in northeastern New Mexico, near the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is an extinct cinder cone volcano that is part of the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field. The volcano is accessible by car to the rim of the crater where a trail around the rim offers magnificent views of the volcanic field and where another trail allows visitors to hike to the bottom of the crater. There are additional trails where visitors can explore this well-preserved volcano; while at the highest point views of the snow-capped mountains can be seen. There are approximately one-hundred volcanoes surrounding the Monument; and a stop at the Visitor's Center offers a Ranger-led interpretive program that explores ten-million years of volcanic geological history in the area.
