Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns National Park in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico was established to preserve over one-hundred caves in the protected part of the Chihuahuan Desert. This rugged landscape of rocky slopes, grassland and scattered trees holds one of the largest caves in the world. Although visitors come to explore caves, there are opportunities to hike, camp, take scenic drives and attend programs at the Visitor's Center. Ranger-guided tours of the caves are available while the cave known as the Big Room offers a self-guided tour. The desert environment being wetter than other such deserts has a diverse ecosystem with habitats supporting plants and animals from insects to cougars, with a large colony of bats whose cave departure at dusk is astounding. Marine life preserved in rocks evidence an ancient sea, while ice age bones of animals have been found at cave entrances. With over a million different specimens, the Park museum has a preservation program.
