Chickasaw National Recreation Area

Chickasaw National Recreation Area is located in the south-central sector of Oklahoma, approximately midway between Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Dallas, Texas. Although the region encompassing the Park was not officially recognized for its unique attributes until 1902, the area has been used since the prehistoric era as a haven for those seeking the benefits of its cool water, mineral springs and shade; thereby giving the Park its reputation as an oasis by all who sheltered there. Originally recognized for its mineral springs, the Park was renamed Platt National Park in 1906, prior to its eventual evolution into the Chickasaw National Recreation Area; a name chosen to honor the contributions of the Chickasaw Nation to the creation of the Park. Today the region spans many acres inclusive of the original Platt Park, the Arbuckle National Recreation Area and additional lands to form the present configuration. During the Great Depression of the 1930's the Civilian Conservation Core (CCC) worked on rebuilding the Platt area, where even today the historic structures of their time remain as a testament to the work they did. Used as a refuge for those seeking the outdoors for over a hundred years; it is still in use today offering all forms of outdoor pleasure. The completion of the Arbuckle Dam in 1966 has served to add another dimension to the numerous outdoor activities. Whether seeking lake, mountains, woodland or springs, all are here to enjoy. Even indoor activities are offered at the Travertine Nature Center which contains not only dioramas, but live animal exhibits such as amphibians, reptiles and birds of prey, with an interactive learning area for all ages. In addition, there is a Visitor Information Station operated in conjunction with the Sulphur Chamber of Commerce that provides information, leaflets and brochures as well as answering your inquiries regarding camping, hiking trails, sports activities, and more.
