City of Rocks National Reserve in Idaho is an incredible landscape of granite which became a place of enchantment and wonder for the emigrants bound for California during 1842. This was part of the route on the historic California Trail that was unforgettable to those passing through. This is a land of huge pinnacles and monoliths formed billons of years ago. Today the Reserve offers hiking, climbing, mountain biking, bird watching, horseback riding and camping. The Visitor Center in Almo offers information about the area, with directions to Elephant Rock, the Twin Peaks, Circle Creek Basin and Keiser's Helmet to name a few. If you stop at Camp Rock you will see where emigrants used axle grease to write their names and the dates they past through the area; and of course Treasure Rock with its tale of buried treasure from a stage coach robbery.
