Colorado National Monument is located between the cities of Fruita and Grand Junction in the state of Colorado. The monument was established to preserve the natural resources of the geologic splendor that comprises the 32 square miles of majestic mesas and the surrounding canyons where golden eagles soar through the landscape. Much of this area was thought of as impossible to traverse; however early in the 20th century John Otto began exploring and creating trails on the plateaus and in the canyons, leading to the creation of the preservation movement. Once the Monument was established, Otto became the first park ranger, where he remained for sixteen years while he lived in a tent and maintained the trails. For this remarkable feat he was paid one dollar per month.
