Coronado National Memorial

Coronado National Memorial in Arizona was established to commemorate the expedition into the Southwest by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, a "conquistador" or "conqueror" who ventured into the Spanish Rio Grande Valley in 1540 in search of fabled "riches". This was the first organized expedition into the lands north of what is today Mexico. His venture was considered a failure, as the fabled gold he sought did not materialize; however exploration of the "New World" was a momentous age in history. Coronado Memorial is located near Sierra Vista, Arizona by the Huachuca Mountains on the United States and Mexican border; with magnificent vistas of the San Pedro River Valley which is believed to be the route of the expedition led by Coronado. The Memorial was established as an affirmation of friendship between the two countries. Coronado National Memorial has two "sister parks" in Mexico; Chiricahua National Monument has partnered with Coronado National Memorial to manage the ecosystems and wildlife habitats across the borders and to conserve natural and cultural resources. El Chico National Park in Mexico joined this mutual partnership in 2003 which further strengthens the bond between the two countries. Recreational activities at Coronado include hiking, picnicking, wildlife and nature walks, auto tours and caving. The Memorial has a great diversity of ecosystems which foster a variety of fauna and flora, in addition to scenic drives, with an overlook at Montezuma Pass that offers the opportunity to make the brief hike to Coronado Peak. There are several other trails for hikers, as well as Coronado Cave which offers the opportunity to view a wonderful variety of formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and helictites. A small area of the Huachucas is protected land within the Memorial which is habitable for some rare endangered species including game animals as well as the larger predators. History and nature programs, including tours are available at Coronado National Memorial during at the tourist season.
