Devils Postpile National Monument

Devils Postpile National Monument established 1911 to protect and preserve this extraordinary towering geologic columnar basalt formation is in the high Sierras near Mammoth Lakes, California. The Postpile formation created by a lava flow has noticeable glacial striations and glacial polish; the uniqueness of this formation lies in its hexagonal columns and lack of horizontal jointing. Two miles from this spectacular vision is Rainbow Falls whose cascading water creates a myriad of colorful rainbows in its mist. This magnificent environment offers a numerous diversity of plant and animal life that includes black bear, coyote and pine martens. Hiking the John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail which pass through the monument is popular; as is camping, biking, fishing, winter snowshoeing and skiing; with a winter caution concerning avalanches.
