Effigy Mounds National Monument located near Marquette, Iowa was established to preserve early American Indian earthen mounds in the shape of animals. Take one of the many ranger-guided hikes offered throughout the year, or a self-guided hike through forest, prairie and wetland viewing mounds that are sacred to many American Indian Tribes. The visitor center has a brief film about the mound builders, and a museum exhibiting archaeological and natural specimens, some over 2,000 years old.
