Fort Point National Historic Site is located at the Presidio in San Francisco, California. The historic Fort Point built prior to the Civil War during the 1800's was constructed to defend the new fledgling State. Eventually referred to as "the pride of the Pacific" due to its architectural masonry, as well as its magnificent coastal setting, the fort never had the need to fire its cannons in any conflict. After the last army barracks were closed, the historical significance of the fort became recognized through lobbying by retired military. Today the fort which lies at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, has exhibits, self-tours and guided tours for the public. There is also a schedule of special events, including a candlelight evening in late fall.
