Fort Vancouver National Historic Site

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is located in Washington and Oregon. The two units consist of Fort Vancouver in Washington; and the residences of John McLoughlin and Dr. Forbes Barclay in Oregon, both within close proximity to the fort. McLoughlin and Barclay were part of the Hudson Bay Company, a British concern that operated in the American territories. The fort provided protection for the company operations, the village that grew around the fort and the immigrants who followed the Oregon Trail. These were important historical events in the development of the far west, and the preservation of the fort and the homes of the people who were instrumental in these events retell the legacy of the past. There are numerous cultural demonstrations in period dress which re-enact the times, including Victorian handcrafts; as well as weaponry demonstrations.
