Gateway National Recreation Area, comprised of three separate units, the Staten Island Unit, the Jamaica Bay Unit, and the Sandy Hook Unit is spread across New Jersey and New York; and was created to preserve the natural resources of the area and its historic buildings which include historic forts, airports and America's oldest operating lighthouse where you will find narratives of maritime, defense and aviation history; and as a means to provide a recreation area for the dense urban communities. Activities include swimming in the ocean, birding, sailing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, cycling and camping. Among the three separate units the ecosystems vary from ocean dunes, a wildlife refuge, maritime forests, beaches and salt marshes which provide habitats for wildlife and birds migrating along the Atlantic Flyway.
