Great Falls Park

Great Falls Park runs along the Potomac River in Virginia, is part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and is overseen by the National Park Service. Yearly flooding has created an ever-changing geologic ecosystem, yet is home to rare plants and wildlife. The first people known to inhabit the area were Paleo-Indians circa 10,500 BC, while in later centuries the area became a meeting place for many Native Americans. The Visitor Center is within easy reach of many trails, some of which welcome cyclists and equestrians; birding is popular, as is fishing, climbing and whitewater activities primarily for experienced rafters. There are three lookouts on the trails to view the Great Falls Waterfall, and a large picnicking area; in addition to the activities offered at the Visitor Center.
