Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Guadalupe Mountains National Park in West Texas was established in 1972 to protect the exceptional biodiversity of flora and fauna whose habitat is considered the finest example of an ancient, fossilized reef; the region was a vast sea approximately 265 million years ago. The seemingly barren desert with a backdrop of forbidding mountains was used as a stagecoach route, whose station ruins are near the Pine Springs Visitor Center. Guadalupe Peak the highest point in Texas has magnificent views along the trail to the summit and El Capitan Mountain was once used as a landmark for travelers. Today the park is the only official wilderness in the State; it contains a small museum of ranching, an old stone cabin; and McKittrick Canyon comes alive with color in the fall. Activities include hiking, camping and horseback riding and the serenity of these spectacular surroundings.
