Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument in Idaho protects a large concentration of fossils, in particular the Hagerman Horse fossils. The valley was formed over 14,000 years ago by a flood, leaving behind canyons, sand bars and huge boulders. Located near the Snake River, the valley has a great deal of water with hot and cold springs. There are over 220 species of plants and animals from the Pliocene epoch, which represents life prior to the last Ice Age. To truly enjoy your visit, plan to stop at the Visitor Center prior to your exploration, where some incredible fossil exhibits can be viewed, in addition to an informative DVD and other programs when available.
