Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park is an archipelago of Michigan that is accessible only by air or boat. This unique wilderness was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve for its distinctive ecosystem whose habitats are home to only 18 animal species due to its isolated location in the northwestern part of the Lake Superior. Isle Royale preserves over 132,000 acres which is almost entirely designated as wilderness area. The National Park Service maintains its largest ship, The Ranger III, in Houghton, Michigan to transport visitors to the island wilderness for exploration, scientific research in addition to recreational scuba diving, hiking, boating, canoeing and kayaking recommended for those with experience. Climatic factors create rough waters on the lake, with rapid changes in weather and temperatures which ranges from 50 degrees (F) to a high of 80 degrees (F) with sudden thunder storms. Despite the weather conditions, Isle Royale has become a popular destination where some visit for fishing, day hikes, others for camping, as well as back country enthusiasts and scuba diving opportunities. Isle Royale scuba divers favor exploration of the many sunken vessels that the National Park Service conserves as a cultural resource to be preserved for perpetuity. The Visitor Centers at Houghton, Rock Harbor and Windigo provide information regarding Interpretive Programs, Cruises, Tours of cultural and historic import on the islands; and information on Rock Harbor Lodge and the predator-prey study of wolves on Isle Royale, which is the longest continuous research of this kind on earth. Brochures and information regarding cultural resources including history of the Ojibway, whose use of the islands goes back to prehistoric times, historic settlements such as Daisy Farm or Rock Harbor Lighthouse can be accessed at the Visitor Centers. Or take a cruise to Minong Mine or a boat trip to Hidden Lake. There are many adventures available in this spectacular and rugged setting which was covered in ice some 11,000 years ago. Today Isle Royale offers spectacular landscapes, where the northern temperate forest encroaches upon the rocky shores, trails lead to breathless views, while sunshine gives way to sudden storms creating a shimmering luminescence to the panorama. Whether spending a day, camping or staying at the lodge, this is truly a memorable experience.
