John Day Fossil Beds National Monument located in eastern Oregon was established in 1974 to protect the most extensive record of animal and plant fossils spanning over 40 to 65 million years from the Cenozoic Era. Tour the museum and the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center at Sheep Rock, visit the Painted Hills or Picture Gorge where centuries old Native American pictographs can be found.
