Joshua Tree National Park was declared a National Park in 1994; over half the park's total acreage is a designated wilderness. The park includes mountains at the southwest edge of the park, two desert areas, each having a unique ecosystem. Mojave Desert higher, drier and cooler is habitat of the Joshua tree; Colorado Desert at a lower elevation features habitats of scrub, bush, cactus, sandy soil grasslands and desert dunes. Native California Fan Palm occurs naturally in oases where all forms of wildlife abound; there are pinion pine, juniper and scrub oak; with interesting geologic formations drawing rock climbers and scrambling enthusiasts. This 100 million year old scenic display with its boulders, trees and deserts create an unimaginable landscape of unsurpassed beauty for all.
