Lava Beds National Monument, established 1925 is located in northeastern California near the Oregon State border. The largest concentration of lava tube caves in North America and Petroglyph Point, displaying Native American rock art is found here. Visiting caves that have marked entrances with trails is an astonishing experience; or take a ranger-guided tour of the superlative Crystal Ice or Fern Caves. Surprisingly, an ecosystem of flora and fauna has adapted to this inhospitable environment both inside and outside of caves. Volcanic activity formed hundreds of caves that Native Americans used for centuries. The famous battle of 1872-1873 involved Modoc Indian leader Kintpuash ("Captain Jack") who with 53 fighting men and their families repelled huge army forces for five months from their lava fortress.
