Muir Woods National Monument established January 1908 is located north of San Francisco Bay along the coast of Marin County, California. This old growth redwood forest, named after famed conservationist John Muir, is home to redwood trees whose average age ranges between 500 and 800 years; the oldest at least 1,200 years old and can reach heights of 400 feet. The unique bio-diversity of flora and fauna is specific to low light density forests. Ladybugs abound, some creatures live under the lush fern covered forest floor, or high within the canopy; while Redwood Creek provides a safe spawning habitat for endangered salmon; and tannin from the redwood repels insects limiting the species of flowers. Hiking in this enchanting primeval rain forest is an experience of immense magnitude.
