Nez Perce National Historical Park

Nez Perce National Historical Park was established to commemorate the Nez Perce people whose culture spans ten thousand years of history. The native name for the Nez Perce is Nimiipuu, which means "The People." This Park is unique as it is spread over thirty-eight sites located in Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Washington. The main Visitor site is located in Spalding, Idaho where the museum exhibits have numerous artifacts and ceremonial objects. The Park interprets three of the main tribal stories involving Coyote who appears in many Nez Perce Stories in different forms. Each of the sites throughout the Pacific Northwest provides short trails with varying themes, such as Big Hole National Battlefield. A fascinating fact concerns the Nez Perce love for the Appaloosas. Once the horse was introduced to them, the Nez Perce became recognized for their large herds of animals with superior breeding traits.
