Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island National Seashore established 1962 is located along the south Texas coast, and protects the longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world. North Padre Island is the preserved area, while South Padre Island is known for vacationers. The park whose pristine sandy beaches, dunes, and tidal flat environments include a west coast windsurfing area at Laguna Madre, is widely known for its public release of Kemp's Ridley sea turtle hatchlings which is an endangered species. The region hosts a variety of other turtles and many vital ecosystems abound in the park, including its renowned Central Flyway that is essential to a myriad of birds depending upon Padre Island for their survival. In addition to the important marine life habitats for threatened and endangered species, the Laguna Madre is one of few hypersaline lagoons that exist in the world.
