Petrified Forest National Park is located in Arizona; the park contains the largest occurrence of petrified wood in the world. Visit the magnificent multicolored badlands known as the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest where wood turned to stone can be found. The park is an amalgam of historic structures, an example of native grassland environment, archeological sites, fossils that are over 200 million years old, and American Indian petroglyph sites which constitute over 13,000 years of history and human culture. There is a Science and Education Center, a lecture series, camping, sightseeing, hiking, backpacking in the wilderness, horseback riding, wildlife and bird watching; this is also a place to do earth caching (learning about unique geoscience features) and geocaching (GPS treasure-hunting).
