Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area established 1967 to protect this spectacular desert with its exceptional geologic features, located west of Las Vegas, is Nevada's first National Conservation Area. Numerous plants, including the Joshua tree, Mojave yucca, Agaves, the protected habitat of the Desert Tortoise and animals are representative of the best found in the Mojave Desert. Wild burros, rabbits and squirrels abound; with sightings of bighorn sheep at higher elevations. Keystone Thrust, a popular destination is known for its stunning band of red rock contrasting with sandstone walls. A scenic 13-mile drive loops around cliffs, buttes, magnificent rock formations; hiking trails, rock climbing, horseback riding, biking, camping, Native American petroglyphs, a Children's Discovery trail, and even a western ghost town are all part of this unique area.
