Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument

Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument was established to preserve the history and ruins of the Spanish Franciscan missions which were built during the early 17th century; and to preserve the manner in which the Pueblo People co-existed with the friars. There are ruins of three churches at different mission locations, in addition to an excavated pueblo structure. Less than a hundred years after the missions were built the entire area experienced difficulties which affected both Indian and Spaniard. There is documented evidence suggesting that between crop failure and the more serious problem of the escalation of the war with the Apache Indians the entire population was forced to migrate to other areas.
