San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park was founded in 1983 by the United States to preserve four of five Spanish missions located along the San Antonio River at San Antonio, Texas. The missions were part of the colonization of the Spanish Southwest dating back to the 1700's. The fifth mission in San Antonio, known as the Alamo is owned by the State of Texas. All of the missions and several additional cultural sites that exist within the park are listed in The National Register of Historic Places. The Archdiocese of San Antonio still owns part of the four missions and the Diocese run them as active parishes. The Visitor Center at Mission San Jose shows an award-winning film while the museum offers further historic information. Guided tours are offered, in addition to hiking and bike trails in the park.
