San Juan Island National Historical Park was commemorated to preserve the history of the peaceful resolution of the San Juan Boundary Dispute known as the "Pig War" which actually refers to the killing of a pig. Following this incident, the United States and England joined together in placing their armies on the island to keep the peace, and both garrisons remained for the next 12 years until the Treaty of Washington was signed. Historic structures and archaeological objects from both camps are on display at the Visitor Center; and a "Pig War" DVD provides historical information. There are many park activities offered, such as hiking, boating and kayaking, beach walking, tide pooling and birdwatching.
