Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area established in 1978, is a vast network of individual parks, ranches, canyons and open space preserves located within the greater Los Angeles, California region. Located in a Mediterranean climate region, the marine waters and the surrounding land is among one of five Mediterranean Biomes presently being researched for interaction between the human and natural habitats. The Recreation Area includes beaches, some adjacent to the Area property; in addition the Rim Trail will eventually connect all park properties via one trail. One can go hiking, biking, camping and horseback riding; birding is also popular, as is enjoying the wildflowers. Explore one of the visitor centers; Will Rogers State Historic Park or go on a ranger-guided tour of the Paramount Ranch.
