Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has been touted as one of the best places to visit in America. This lovely region located in Michigan offers thirty-five miles of Lake Michigan's coastline which includes the North and South Manitou Islands. Taking the scenic drive during the warmer months along the coast through the forest and dunes affords magnificent views of Lake Michigan and Lake Glen as well as the dunes, where slopes of sand rise 200 feet high. Stop at a picnic area along the way, find a beach along the Lake, or stop at one of the Visitor Centers for trail maps and information about the many sights in the Park. Climbing the Sleeping Bear Dunes can provide hours of fun along the steep slopes, as long as you follow the safety rules and follow the trail markers up the slopes in order not to lose your way. At the top of the dunes some people hike to Lake Michigan. For a less strenuous experience, take the short Interpretative Dune Trail at the base which gives you the opportunity to learn about the plants and wildlife in the area. There are a myriad of activities in the park other than hiking the dunes; there is cycling, places to swim, scuba dive, use powerless sailplanes, kayak, canoe, hunt, fish, paraglide, and much more. During the winter months all kinds of snow sports are offered from snowmobiling and skiing, to snowshoeing and tubing. This winter paradise may cause the scenic drive to close, while opening up the wintertime splendor revealing the magical vista of snow covered pine trees complementing the white landscape. Do stop at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center to learn more about the historical and geologic basis of the area as well as information regarding the different areas of the Park. They also offer a short presentation of "Dreams of a Sleeping Bear" with photography and music which also serves as an orientation to the Park. Rangers can inform you of beaches, lakes, Port Oneida, the Inland Lakes, the Glen Haven General Store, the Blacksmith Shop, the US Coast Guard Station and Maritime Museum, The Manitou Passage State Underwater Preserve and the Cannery Boathouse Museum. There will also be information available regarding the Lighthouse at South Manitou Island, the Visitor Center on the Island which occupies what was once the Island's General Store. There is camping and backpacking on North Manitou Island where twenty-seven acres has been set aside around the farm area to preserve the cultural resources that existed here in the 1870s.
