Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument was established in 1930 to protect a volcanic cinder cone located north of Flagstaff, Arizona after a public outcry in response to a proposal by a film company to detonate the crater in an attempt to stimulate a volcanic eruption; the last know eruption from the crater is estimated to have occurred approximately 1,000 years ago. The lava flows and cinders still appear as though they are as recent as at the time the volcano erupted, however today you will find both flora and fauna and ponderosa pine on the hillsides. There is a loop trail at the base of the crater, as well as ranger-guided hikes and interpretive programs. The one-mile Lava Flow Trail loops through a stupendous geologic landscape and is a self-guided hike. The Visitor's Center offers exhibits, and camping is available.
