White Sands National Monument is located in the northern limits of the Chihuahuan Desert in the State of New Mexico, where white gypsum sand forms one of the rare natural wonders of the world. Gypsum sand is rare, as the mineral is normally water-soluble, however Tularosa Basin an "internally drained valley" allowed for this unusual formation. The scenic drive starts at the Visitor's Center, where a permit for backpacking camping can be obtained. No vehicles may remain overnight, however sheltered picnic areas are available; and since the gypsum does not retain heat, hiking is popular, as is sand-sledding and Ranger-guided tours. Wayside exhibits are along the Dunes Drive, with museum exhibits at the Center. Preservation of the park includes rare white animals and plants that have evolved here. Surrounded by a missile site, where the first atomic bomb was tested during World War II, the Trinity Site which was cleaned-up in the 1950's can also be visited.
