Zion National Park located in southwestern Utah is comprised of monumental sandstone canyon walls with towering cliffs, monoliths and natural arches of variegated reddish-tan. A prominent feature is Zion Canyon which can be accessed by Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. The park is on the Colorado Plateau bordering Great Basin and Mojave Desert Provinces creating unique ecosystems that provide habits for a multitude of animals and the most prolific plant life in Utah. Backpacking, camping, hiking and Ranger-led tours are a large part of the Zion experience. There are two electric trams and shuttle buses as well; vehicles are only allowed during summer months. Photography, wildflowers, birdwatching, cycling and horseback riding are popular in addition to shuttle tours with Rangers whose talks range from animals, geology, human history and a variety of specialized topics. There is also the Zion Canyon Field Institute offering opportunities as hiking with a wildlife biologist to discovering the past with an Archaeology Road Trip.
