One of the more popular trails within the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is the Hatton Trail. From the southern trailhead, a short distance after the start of the hike, the trail begins to climb but evens out to a level trail as it meanders through old growth redwoods and ferns; the Douglas Fir and Big Leaf Maple and other native trees that grow here are covered with moss due to the damp rainforest environment and adds to the enchanted feel of the forest. For a longer and more energetic hike, the Hatton Trail connects to the Hiouchi Trail which follows the riverbank of the fast flowing Smith River.
The Hatton Trail has a maximum elevation of 292 ft., a minimum elevation of 74 ft. and an elevation range of 218 ft.
